Indulging yourself for Halloween

Fall: the time of the year where all the ghouls, paranormal entities and general spooky stuff becomes much more apparent. So what are some games that would complement this intense time of the year? Well, they're getting harder to find anymore... Two of the most popular survival horror series, Resident Evil and Silent Hill,  have succumbed to tossing out their previous game design choices, going for more streamlined action, instead of straight survival horror.

However, there are many older and even fewer newer games that can successfully provide this terrifying rush. All of these games may not be able to do it, but a lot of these games will allow you to indulge in the dark setting of the holiday. The games mentioned here will be organized by genre and rated by how scary it is, as well as have a price tag or method of legally attaining the game.

Rating for scariness is by small skulls (1 to 5).

Parasite Eve Series

Genre: RPG

12 dollars total for both games on PSN

Parasite Eve is a unique series in that it is a JRPG with a few survival horror elements. The end result is a cult classic that really does not make the player jump out of their seat, but rather have them creeped out by how real the monster designs can be. With the familiar environments (museum, hospital, police station, and various other buildings) players can further relate to the places the protagonist ends up at. The protagonist Aya Brea is a rookie of the New York Police Department, who ends up fighting monsters created from having a mutated/evolved mitochondria which was invoked by a mysterious entity. The battle system plays in real time and allows the player to dodge attacks and positioning while waiting for Square Soft's own ATB system. With the game only lasting about five to eight hours, it is a really quick one to play through and would be easy to work in to the Halloween schedule.

This scene has always creeped the hell out of me...

The sequel took a sharp turn in game design, tossing out the real time battle system for a Resident Evil classic survival horror game play, which more successfully allows the jump-out-of-your-seat scares. With the poor camera angles and poor controls, it makes the player panic much more easily (but still does not detract from the over all experience). The protagonist is still Aya Brea, a Japanese American who was part of the New York Police Department, is now part of the FBI's Mitochondrial Investigation and Suppression Team (MIST). The eerie and dark locations the game takes place in creates a much more creepy atmosphere compared to the previous iteration.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Genre: FPS Survival Horror

10 dollars on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/22340/)

Please don't come this way... I've already made it this far!

The foreshadowing, the unfamiliar areas, the unwelcoming towns people; everything about this game screams creepy. Throw in some paranormal monsters and it gets even creepier. This has to be one of the scariest games I have played, the environments as well as the dialogue is done extremely well, however, the pacing may be a bit too slow for casual gamers. Oh, it's extremely difficult too, its common to replay some parts way too many times. Despite all of this it is a very engaging game with many scares, with an extremely interesting story and a sarcastic main character. This game also seemed to inspire Amnesia the Dark Descent due to the fact it had very similar game design choices (no hud, insanity).

HOME

Genre: Horror

3 dollars on steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/215670/)

Aw shucks, it's just a body! Oh wait... I hope I didn't do this...

HOME is an interesting game, deciding to use very archaic design choices, however, it worked really well for the game. The atmosphere, the foreshadowing, and the inner monologue of the main character creates an extremely haunting game. The protagonist wakes up in an unknown house and finds a carcass in the next room; it quickly escalates from there. It's an extremely short game, ranging from 10 minutes to an hour, but many events in the game make you stop and want to hesitate to further your nightmare. For three dollars you get a suprising amount, especially when I actually played through it a few times to try and find everything.

Slender

Genre: FPS Survival Horror

FREE! (http://slendergame.com/)

I have never played this game to be honest, but I have watched my friend play it many times; it really does not disappoint with the scares. It's an extremely stressful game, just like the Clock Tower series since you cannot fight the stalker. This stress, this anxiety, creates a unique tension I like while playing games. The story is simple, the protagonist goes to a forest to investigate, however, Slender Man is there to prevent you from your investigation...

It's damn scary... Download it and you will not be disappointed!

Uninvited

Yea, cause' that was my first thought about my car blowing up.

Genre: Point and Click Horror

Out of print: emulators and roms are available for it

Uninvited: a game from the 80's that was originally made for Mac. However, it has been ported to DOS, NES, and Windows. It's a point and click adventure where the perspective is set in first person. There's a lot of tongue in cheek humor in the game, such as an item called “Ghost b Gone” as well as a few other things. The creepiness of the game stems from the hauntingly bad audio as well as how many ways you can die in the game.
