Introducing the NAC Steam Score Beta

I've been working a lot on the site the last few days. Along with rebuilding the back end, I've started a cool new feature I call your "steam score". By entering your steam ID in to your NAC profile, you will be opted in to this new part of the site.

The steam score system will take the game and achievement data from your steam community profile and assign points. These points are based on rarity, but also balanced so that most games are worth between 2k and 3k points.

As you can probably see from the new links added to the top of the page. I plan to have a lot of new content coming along with this system and would appreciate anyone who wants to help me test it out.

Please contact me w/ any issues you have with the new backend or the new steam score system.

I think whomever is topping the steam leaderboard should have the trophy show up on their profile and also unlock a permanent title. I WILL COME UP WIF SUMFIN!

Sounds good. I would assume it would be a later feature once the leaderboards and all that jazz is kinked out.

My plans for the steam score was to finish up the various sections we have now. For example the full game list needs to be linked to the various game pages, and I want to add the ability for a user to request a refresh of their score so they don't have to wait for the next update, which could be up to 7 days from now for a full refresh or 2 hours for a minor refresh. There are a few more little things like that as well as making some speed improvements.

You notice there are leaderboards for each individual game on their respective page. If you go here: http://notanothercastle.com/SteamScore/Game.aspx?id=49, you can see the l4d2 page and leaderboard. On the users profile page I want to add a list of trophies. So, there would be a 1st 2nd 3rd place trophy for each game, and a 1-10th overall. These would just be a cool little thing that you could see on there.

We could also tie points/leaderboard positions to titles, but I'm not sure how it would work w/ people who unlock the title, would it be unlocked forever, or would it go away if you fell out of your spot? I think it would be kind of weird to have it stay forever for the per game leaderboard stuff, but it would make sense for maybe a "got 10k steam score" one. Also, I think anyone who makes it to the top spot in the leaderboard should probably get some kind of permanent title.

Keep in mind that the points change depending on how rare the achievements are and changes to the algorithm, which I’m still working on. You could have 35k points right now and 34.5k tomorrow, without getting/losing any achievements.

If anyone has an opinion on the algorithm, I wouldn't mind discussing new ideas with how to calculate the achievements, but there are some points that I am pretty set on. My goals for the algorithm were:

  • To keep the points a whole number, I don't like having decimals.
  • Make rarer achievements worth more
  • Make every game worth playing and somewhat balanced. (IE every game should be in a general range)
  • Have games people play A LOT worth more points (Right now games that are played more than 24 hours per person who has played it are worth up to 3x as much, depending on how much they are played). It seemed silly to have Tf2 and left for dead worth 3k when they are played so much more than other games, but I also don't want to weight completely on play time, because tf2 would be worth something like 100k points, hence the cap.
